Introduction
The current economic atmosphere in South Africa is one in which the consumer is ever more tightening his or her belt. The water scarcity in SA has forced municipalities to hold users more accountable by additional by-laws and increased tariffs while electricity prices have sky-rocketed as ESKOM struggles to avoid load-shedding. The combined result is that the total council rates, taxes, and charges have risen by a cumulative 559% from 2000 to 2018, according to MSCI operating cost data.
Mein TeinloT’ssolution is designed such that it connects all these different objects and adding sensors to them adds a level of digital intelligence to devices that would be otherwise dumb, enabling them to communicate real-time data without involving a human being. The Internet of Things is making the fabric of the world around us smarter and more responsive merging the digital and physical universes.
These three products are:
1) Greasy, a smart geyser controller.
2) DropSensor, a smart water meter.
3) Flooding sensor, a water detection sensor.
We are currently introducing the HVAC energy consumption monitor designed for commercial buildings. This service will seek to monitor actual energy used in terms of KiloWatts usage directly towards HVAC systems within a commercial building. Monitor and report on the peak times of use, also detect and send alerts on “over the set limits” consumptions, thereby facilitating efficiency control measures and decision making processes.

The Products
The Geasy, a smart geyser controller, is installed on the electrical of supply to the geyser, between it and the isolation switch. This gives the Geasy control over the electricity usage of the geyser. The Geasy is connected to the internet with a GSM (cellphone-based) connection, allowing for high-resolution data and making monitoring and control functionality near real-time.
The Geasy was developed at Stellenbosch University, with a focus on energy efficiency, over a period of several years. Geasy has been fine-tuned over multiple iterations, resulting in each subsequent model being more reliable and commercially viable (i.e. mass-producible) than the preceding ones.
Geasy has been field-tested, in the consumer-based model, since 2015 and has stood the test of time. In addition to the energy efficiency provided, and of most importance to the insurance industry, is the leak detection capability of the Geasy. Leak detection allows for the mitiga
tion and prevention of possible consequential losses associated with geyser failure.
The end-user is able to benefit from the technology through the energy efficiency and visibility it provides. This increased efficiency, through correct scheduling and temperature control, can save around 25% of a household‘s normal energy usage per month. The possible savings for a middle-class home are about equivalent to that of the home insurance premium itself, making it an attractive proposition for any prospective short-term home insurance client.
This energy-saving equates directly to a 25% saving on associated climate impact. Therefore, a significant portion of CO2 emissions can be reduced in developing countries, such as South Africa, where fossil fuel use is still the norm.
The residential sector uses about 17% of the total electricity generated in South Africa.
During periods of peak demand in South Africa 7-10 am and 5-9 pm residential demand is up to 35% of the total demand required.
Drop Sensor can be installed on any pulse-capable water meter, meaning it is well suited for low cost and retrofit purposes. As a result, it is compatible with a wide range of residential and bulk water meters. These water meters traditionally require manual reading of the register value for monitoring purposes. Our service makes it possible to take these meters online by interfacing the meter with our wired solution.
This device has been extensively used since 2017 with its principal claim to fame of the #Smart water meter challenge, which was implemented in the period preceding the possible day Zero. The successes of this device are found in campaigns that received a wide range of coverage in the Cape region where underprivileged schools have donated this solution as a result of them being identified as one of the inefficient users of water at the time in that region. Some 350 schools received these devices and resulted in estimated savings, through targeted interventions of approximately 720 million liters and R52million over a two year period.
For body-corporates, the power also lies with the ability to enforce stricter rules and regulations on water usage. In many cases due to the low cost of water, the utility was included in the levies, this has become an outdated method as tenants have different needs (swimming pool, larger families) thus raising the total consumption. By installing our smart metering solution, managing consolidated water monitoring won’t require additional human resources.
- Users can browse through their historic usage as well as see their present usage in near-real-time. This provides valuable insight as to what activities use the most water in their home.
- The presentation of data on the web-app makes interpretation intuitive, empowering users to make behavioral changes and informed decisions about appliances and upgrades to their homes.
- The web-app can be accessed on mobile phones or tablets, with no loss of functionality. Scheduling and control of one’s geyser can also be done in real-time from any device.
- Event notifications, such as leak events detected by Geasy, can be received by multiple parties via SMS and/or email, allowing for action to be taken timeously.
- All of Mein Tein loT’s different hardware devices can be accessed via the web-app and seen in one place.
A compact, yet powerful device for flooding detection. This device will send an alarm via SMS and email in order to give you peace of mind. When just idle, the device sends a daily keep-alive message in order to assure that it is still functional, as well as letting you know if it has been knocked over, therefore the technology is set-and-forget, allowing peace of mind for years to come.
Why use our tech innovation?
If it goes undetected & un-attended to, for a period of 7 days, the total number of litres that would be lost will be 680 litres. The monetary value associated with such an amount of wastage would be in the region of R498. This is money down the drain which one would not even be aware that they are incurring normal circumstances.
Even worse when you have unexposed leakages, there is no way of prevention until only when the bill hits you. Painful altercations with your property managing agents or body corporates for suspicions of overcharging of your consumptions. Other incidents involve the misuse of your water resources by intent or negligence which you will not be aware unless you are prompted to probe due to high bills.
Time consuming consultations and dispute logging with the municipalities that are improperly recording your meter readings or not recording the meters readings at all and just billing you using estimates. When you find yourself with flooding in the house or property and have damages extending to other furniture & fixtures and electronic devices in the household. You will be fortunate if you are insured and the insurer honours your claim without putting you through stress before or even reject your claim
When you have our solution, you are therefore in control of all the above scenarios, you can detect and prevent them the minute they show signs.
You can confidently review and accept your billings from the municipalities and property managing agents.
Confidently lodge disputes with documented support for any irregularities on your consumption billings.
You can facilitate strategic decision making in controlling your consumption and all the associated costs involved
